Comment:
Blastocystis hominis - Cyst which has lost its coat - TEM. The multilayered cyst wall surrounds the cell which is 3.7- 5 microns wide and appears to develop beneath the surface coat (seen in vacuolar and granular forms) which later dissociates itself to result in a bare cyst as seen here. Lipid-like and glycogen inclusions are present in the condensed cytoplasm. Long strands of endoplasmic reticulum partially enclose the nucleus (usually only one). Mitochondria have an electron-opaque matrix and few cristae. This is the form thought to the transmissible stage which survives in the external environment protected by the cyst wall.
